Charles Wallace Murry has always been an exceptional young man. As a toddler, he didn't talk for so long that people in the village he and his family live in began to think he was either dumb or dumb -- not quite right in the head. But when he did begin speaking, it was in complete sentences, with nothing babyish about it.

His IQ is off the charts, and it has made life difficult for him at times, when he tries to adjust to "normal" society. Supernormal events, on the other hand, he takes calmly. He has traveled to worlds beyond the galaxy, and he's traveled Within people in his very own Where (though different Whens).

Charles is a master kyther, kything being something akin to telepathy, but deeper. It's the opening of oneself to another, completely, sharing thoughts and emotions.

In spite of his intelligence, Charles is very human, and with humanity comes certain sins -- especially pride. Charles often tries to control things that he simply can't, and it gets him into dangerous situations.

Charles comes to Milliways a few years after the events of A Swiftly Tilting Planet. He's currently 19, tallish, lanky, with pale blue eyes and longish fair hair. He's equally likely to be found reading a book on advanced nuclear physics as a collection of poetry. His timeline runs parallel to bar time, but in the year 1982.
